We recently visited Bergen Dam Cottage near Bredasdorp. The 4-sleeper wooden cottage is set remotely on a farm where you have an outlook over the farmlands and your view consists of mountains and the dam (from there the name ‘Berg’ and ‘Dam’).
To reach the cottage you drive through a few scenic farms (one of which is the owner’s dairy farm where you can get fresh farm milk). The roads are well kept and you can drive with pretty much any car.
The best part of our stay was usually coffee and rusks on the ‘stoep’ in the mornings. Look out for wild buck and if you’re lucky, blue cranes flying from their nests to the open fields early morning (they usually fly back late afternoon or around sunset).
Things to do in Bredasdorp
We visited the Heuningberg Nature Reserve where we took photos of some of the interesting plant and bird life and hiked to the outcrop of rock right at the top. It’s kind of a right of passage when you come to Bredasdorp.
We also visited the maritime museum in Bredasdorp that has a facinating collection of items from shipwrecks that happened around the Western Cape. Also venture to the outside sheds where you’ll find antique hearses and a fire truck. It’s well worth a visit.
Enjoy the video below of the atmosphere at Bergen Dam Cottage.
The night sky is just beautiful here, without too much light from neighbouring towns.
The cottage sleeps 4 (two doubles) and has no electricity. It also has a ‘donkey’ water heater for warm water. It’s PERFECT for disappearing off the grid.
