We recently went for a hike at !Khwa ttu, a conservation camp that combines adventure, relaxation and education to leave a lasting impressing and a new understanding of the phrase “San Spirit Shared”.
Location
!Khwa ttu is about 45 minutes drive from Cape Town up the West Coast Highway (R27). There are some interesting farm stalls along the way too which you can combine into your route.
Hiking
While there are 4 hiking routes, we decided on hiking the Renosterveld 4km route. It’s not extremely strenuous, but we’d advise taking along sufficient water as it can get hot (we hiked in about 30 degrees weather). There is no particular climbing involved on this particular route.
Things to take
- Water
- Binoculars
- Camera
- Backpack for/with picnic items (there are beautiful view points and a boma where you can relax and eat picnic (on the Renosterveld route) – you can also order picnic items from the shop. There are picnic spots closer to the shop/restaurant too.
The Restaurant
We briefly visited the restaurant, but the power was out, so we didn’t eat anything. The Eland Burger looks like it could be nice, so we’ll return in the future to try it out! They also have a low-carb version without the bun. You can also try Eland carpaccio. We’ll report back in future once we try it!
Other Features & Attractions
- Accommodation – we’ll report back if we go and stay over.
- Art Gallery
- Curio Shop – lovely African art and locally produced items that are San inspired
- Conference Centre – you can book your event or corporate functions & conferences here
