Somerset West is set against the beautiful mountains of the Helderberg, overlooking False Bay.
About Somerset West
Somerset West was found on part of the historic farm Vergelegen (one of the oldest vineyards in South Africa) which to this day produces world-class wines and it still open for visits and wine tasting. The area is surrounded by wine estates and essentially still part of the Cape Winelands.
Look out for the Christmas lights and flea markets during December Christmas festivities.
Somerset West is connected by the R44 road to Stellenbosch, just 18 kilometres away and there are many wine estates along the way.
You’ll also be conveniently located to start a trip along the Garden Route as the town is situated near the N2 highway.
You’re also within about a 20-minute drive from the ocean (look out for Bikini Beach for a nice wind-sheltered cove, or Strand main beach for long walks).
Best time to visit Somerset West
Most of the summer months are good for a visit and December could be a bit overbearingly hot. We’d recommend late summer (February – April) as the Cape Winelands are a joy during those months. If you happen to be around in December, come and join the festivities of the Christmas lights and flea markets!
