    About the area

The town of Plettenberg Bay is very popular with both domestic and foreign tourists.

It is a seaside town, located in the Garden Route, Western Cape South Africa. The bay is defined on the southern side by Cape Seal at the end of the Robberg Peninsula (Nature Reserve), which separates the bay from the Indian Ocean.

To the north, the Tsitsikamma and Langkloof Mountains keeps the moisture on the southern slopes of the mountains. This prevents the temperature extremes of the interior reaching the bay, and means that Plettenberg Bay has a temperate climate all year round.

Because the town is built on the hillside, most of the town is on a steep slope leading down to the sea. This means that regardless of where you find yourself accommodated, you will be treated to spectacular views of the bay and surrounding hills and mountains.

Surfers can enjoy surf breaks at both the sandy Central Beach and Lookout Beach. While the sea breezes are perfect for windsurfing and kite-surfing on the (Keurbooms) Lagoon.

Coral reefs encircle Plettenberg Bay, making it a underwater paradise for divers. Dive sites include Redbait Reef, suitable for beginners, and Shallow Blinders, a 3-pinnacled coral reef that is home to leopard sharks, octopus and cuttlefish.

Activities for animal lovers include Birds of Eden, a free-flight bird sanctuary in indigenous forest, and an elephant sanctuary. Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary; the world’s only multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary, is located just a few minutes outside of town. And whales also come near the coast in migration season.

International visitors can also have a taste of local crafts at the nearby Old Nick Village. This 19th-century Cape farm complex hosts the local craft market, as well as a working weaving museum and an indigenous garden.

    Best time to visit

Although Plettenberg Bay is a year-round destination, the best time to visit is during the hot summer months (Dec–Feb). And during whale-watching season (May–Nov), Southern right whales can be seen from the shores.
