About the area

Green Point (Afrikaans: Groenpunt) is an affluent suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. It is located to the north west of the central business district, between the V&A Waterfront and Signal Hill on the Main Road en-route to Sea Point.

It has fast become one of the trendiest residential areas in Cape Town. And is popular under young professionals and especially the Cape Town gay and lesbian community. With narrow villa-lined streets, sidewalk cafes and stylish shops, Green Point exudes a village feel. Many of the homes are Victorian-style restorations that have balconies and trellises as well as lovingly reconditioned original features of this period.

The Cape Quarter – a shopping centre that regards itself as an experience of the essence of ‘Cape Town cool’ – is also conveniently located in the heart of Green Point.

Green Point is a vibrant and lively part of Cape Town both night and day.

During the day, it is the perfect location from which to access some of the popular Cape Town beaches. And close to the city centre, including Long Street, Company Gardens and a number of museums and galleries. It also hosts the Cape Town Stadium, which was constructed on Green Point Common for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Common now serves as the site for the Sunday morning market. This is one of the largest markets in the mother city with traditional African art pieces, music and crafts.

After dark the local pubs, clubs and cabaret restaurants come alive with a cosmopolitan mix of people. Which makes it a popular hangout for locals and visitors alike.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Green Point is during summer, from November to March (and even April). In order to avoid disappointment, it’s usually best to book at least 6 months in advance, especially if you are booking summer holiday rentals.
